Add ACH payment instructions to invoices

Set up ACH payment instructions on your invoice templates, change or hide them for a customer or invoice, and learn when they appear

ACH (Automated Clearing House) payment instructions are the bank details your customers use to pay an invoice by bank transfer. Turnstile shows them on the invoice, on the invoice PDF, and optionally in the invoice email, unless the invoice is collected through Stripe.

You can set ACH instructions at three levels:

ACH instructions on Stripe-collected invoices

ACH instructions are hidden on invoices collected through Stripe, both on the invoice and in the invoice email. This applies when Collect payments for me is selected for the invoice, or when the invoice uses Stripe Billing (legacy feature). Customers paying through Stripe pay through Stripe’s payment page instead.

Because this is checked for each invoice, changing one draft invoice to Collect payments for me hides ACH instructions on that invoice only.

Add ACH instructions for all customers

ACH instructions on the global invoice template are used for every customer that does not have their own.

  1. Go to Settings > Default invoice settings.

  2. Select the Invoice template & numbering tab.

  3. Click Edit invoice template.

  4. Under ACH payment instructions, enter the Bank name, Account name, Routing number, Account number, and Address. All fields are optional.

  5. Click Save changes.

Only the fields that have values appear on the invoice.

Change or hide ACH instructions for one customer

A customer’s invoice template can replace your global ACH instructions with different bank details, or hide them for that customer.

  1. Go to Customers > All customers and select the customer.

  2. Scroll to the invoices section and select Edit invoice settings.

  3. Click Edit invoice template at the top of the window.

  4. Turn on Override vendor ACH instructions.

  5. Enter the bank details this customer should use. To hide ACH instructions for this customer, leave all of the ACH fields blank.

  6. Click Save changes.

Change ACH instructions on one invoice

You can use different ACH instructions on a single draft invoice without changing any template.

  1. Head to Invoices > All invoices.

  2. Open the draft invoice and click the three dots in the top right.

  3. Select Edit invoice.

  4. Under ACH payment instructions, turn on Overwrite on this invoice.

  5. Update the Bank name, Account name, Routing number, Account number, or Address.

  6. Click Apply changes.

To go back to the template’s instructions, click Revert to [template name], then click Apply changes.

Note: Leaving all ACH fields empty when changing ACH instructions on an individual invoice uses the template’s ACH instructions. It does not remove them. To hide ACH instructions, use the customer’s invoice template.

Include ACH instructions in invoice emails

You can also include ACH instructions in the email sent when an invoice is issued. This is an account-wide setting that cannot be turned on for individual customers. It only affects invoices that are not collected through Stripe.

It is only available for Invoice issued emails.

  1. Go to Settings > Default invoice settings.

  2. Select the Turnstile email templates tab.

  3. Select Invoice issued.

  4. Turn on Show ACH instructions on email.

  5. Click Save changes.

When ACH instructions appear on an invoice

ACH instructions appear on an invoice when all of the following are true:

  • The invoice is not collected through Stripe. This means the invoice uses Collect payments manually or manual invoicing.

  • ACH instructions are set on the invoice, the customer’s invoice template, or the global invoice template.

  • The customer’s invoice template does not hide them. ACH instructions are hidden for a customer when Override vendor ACH instructions is turned on and all of the ACH fields are blank.

Turnstile uses the instructions from the first level that has any ACH field filled in: the invoice, then the customer’s invoice template, then the global invoice template. All five fields come from that one level. For example, if a customer’s template has a routing number but no account number, the invoice shows the routing number only and does not use the account number from the global invoice template.

How ACH instruction changes affect existing invoices

Draft invoices show the current ACH instructions from your templates and update when a template changes. Issued invoices keep the ACH instructions they were issued with. If you change banks, invoices your customer already received continue to show the details they were sent with.
