Set and manage invoice proration

Learn how proration works in Turnstile and where to set or edit it on quotes, subscriptions, and plans

Proration allows you to charge only for the time a service is actually used, instead of the full billing period. It’s commonly used when subscriptions start, change, or end mid‑billing cycle.

Proration options

  • No proration: Full price charged for each service period. Starting mid-month or cancelling early does not reduce the charge.

  • Day proration: Customers are only billed for the actual days they used a product or service, not the full billing period.

    • Daily rate = period price ÷ total days in period

    • Charge = daily rate × active days

  • Month proration: Any partial month counts as a full month. Example: a 45-day contract is billed as 2 full months.

Set proration

Proration can be set at the quote, subscription, or plan level. By default, proration is set to days.

Set proration when creating a quote

In the Review billing step of the quote workflow, use the Proration behavior dropdown in the Billing settings section to set proration for the quote.

Note: The Proration behavior dropdown appears when Invoice generation is set to On the 1st of each month. When invoices are generated based on the service start date, billing periods align to the start date and the first period is not prorated.

Set proration when creating a direct subscription

When creating a subscription, click Invoice schedule in the preview panel and then click the settings button (sliders icon) to manage proration for the subscription. The settings button is available when the subscription has a specific start date and auto-renew is turned off.

Set proration on a plan

Proration settings for a plan are in the Billing details tab located in the top left of the add plan page.

Edit proration

Proration can be edited at the individual subscription level or at the plan level. There's not currently a way to set or edit proration across the entire account.

Edit proration on an existing subscription

To edit the proration setting for an existing subscription, you need to amend the subscription. When amending the subscription, click the settings button (sliders icon) in the Invoice schedule panel to manage proration for the subscription. The settings button is available when the subscription has a specific start date, and auto-renew is turned off.

Edit proration for future quotes or subscriptions generated from a plan

Updates to a plan will apply to future quotes or subscriptions generated from that plan. Existing quotes and subscriptions using the plan will not be affected. To update the proration settings for a plan:

  1. Go to Catalog > Plans.

  2. Open the plan’s three‑dot menu and select Edit.

  3. Go to the Billing details tab.

  4. Update the Proration setting.

  5. Click Publish changes to save.
